Workshop information:
THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES OF CHILDREN
Based on the book by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell
From the back of the book:
Kids desperately need to know how much you love them. But if you don't know their special "love language", you may as well be speaking gibberish. Every child (and adult) expresses and receives love best through one of five communication styles. Find out which of these your child speaks. If your love language is different from your child's, you could miss your chance to meet their deepest emotional needs. Discover how to express unconditional feelings of respect, affection and commitment that will resonate in their souls - and inspire them for the rest of their lives.
Carol uses her experiences in both the classroom and the home to share examples and ideas on the application of the Five Love Languages with children under 12 years. The workshop is designed to help parents identify their child’s primary love language as well as recognise and correctly interpret empty love tank signs. Many practical ideas and suggestions are given during the workshops to help parents implement the principles.
LOVING DISCIPLINE
Based on the book “On Becoming Childwise” by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam.
The Childwise book provides a very practical and orderly overview of general parenting principles, and also includes a number of very positive and constructive chapters on discipline training of younger children. This workshop is designed to help parents understand and practically apply these discipline principles on a day-to-day basis with children from around 2 years to 6 years. Very specific examples are given for this age group as Carol has worked out the principles with her own children.

THE CONGENITAL FACTORS
Ross Campbell in his book “How to really Love your Child” reports on fascinating research done on the congenital temperamental factors. Some of these nine factors can be present at birth, and any number or combination of these factors can make a child more difficult, challenging or even tiring to parent! Understanding the congenital factors can help a parent understand their child better and work towards maturing them and developing their particular congenital factor behaviours. Knowing this information can help a parent feel less guilty and more positive about parenting a more difficult child. Please note that an understanding of the Love Languages and Loving Discipline information would be helpful on entering this talk so that parents can be assured they have eliminated empty love tank factors as well as good training factors.
SAFEGUARDING SEXUALITY
Based on the series “God’s Design for Sex” by Stan and Brenna Jones
This Christian series of books provides an excellent foundation for parents to confidently cover sex education with their children from 3 years right through the teenage years. The series of books begins with a story book to be read to children age 3 – 5 years, a second story book for the 5 – 8 age group, and a book to be read with the 9 – 11 years. The well-written teen book for the 11 – 14 year olds is designed to be given to a younger teen to read alone, but is however based on an assumption of open communication on the topic during younger years.
This workshop is designed to help parents know how to “say it” to very young children using the books as a basis. Carol sources the books at a very reasonable price and these are available for sale at the talks. There is also a parent guide giving parents well-researched background information and guidance, and this is divided into four sections according to four phases of childhood development. Carol also covers more difficult topics in the workshop, equipping parents with a Biblical approach for tackling questions and difficult situations.
MAXIMISING LEARNING
Based on a variety of sources including the Harvard University Pre-school Study, Preschoolwise (Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam) and other sources.
Carol has designed a fascinating workshop for the parents of under threes to equip them with a very simple yet highly effective means of ensuring that they cover all important forms of development before the pre-school years. Every parent wants to do the best for their child, but there is so much contradictory information in the public media to confuse new parents. Carol has read widely to find sound information, but has also created a simple system so that parents do not feel overwhelmed by the task at hand. She has applied this successfully with her own children and the workshop is designed to share these insights with parents of very young children. Carol’s concern is that too often parents discover too late what should have been considered, leading to frustration and the difficult process of playing “catch up”. Come and hear a simple yet positive approach that will set your mind at rest regarding your child’s development in the pre-nursery school years.
Testimonials
TEACHING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
This talk is available to schools for parent talks which looks at age-appropriate development of personal responsibility in the pre-school years. Drawing on principles from Love Languages as well as Erik Erikson’s psychosocial developmental stages and Childwise principles, Carol has designed a talk to help parents understand the stages of personal responsibility in young children and how to go about developing greater independence.
SECURE CHILDREN HAPPY CHILDREN
This talk is available to schools for parent talks which looks at seven important factors in developing and maintaining security in children through the pre-school years. Signs of insecurity can hamper a child’s progress in many areas including milestones, educational development and independence. In this talk, Carol outlines some important areas for parents to address when faced with insecurity, and many practical examples on how to foster core security.
MONKEY BUSINESS
This short workshop is designed as a follow-on to the Loving Discipline workshop and is designed to help parents effectively use star charts with children from 2 or 3 years right through the primary school years. This workshop focuses more on the positive aspects of training up a young child, and will equip parents with practical examples and principles to use when using star charts as a form of motivation. Included in the workshop are ideas on using restitution as a consequence, as well as age-appropriate tasks for children to be responsible for in the home.
WORKING FOR SUCCESS (New 2011)
Only available for Preschool parent orientation talks
The success and progress of a child throughout the preschool years is dependent on the active and positive involvement of the parents in loving, training and correctly stimulating their children. A rich and loving home experience together with an active intent to train the under sixes leads to greater support for the educators in the formal classroom situation, and a happier school experience for the child! This pilot talk was very well received for a new learner intake parent orientation talk in 2009, and the comment of the principal was “The talk did wonders this year!”
This talk combines key elements from the Love Languages, Loving Discipline and Maximising Learning workshops that are pertinent to new parents in the preschool setting.
